Caritas Czech Republic launches a fundraising appeal to aid the tsunami victims in Indonesia

Caritas For Indonesia

On Friday, 28 September the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (or Celebes) has suffered the most intensive of earthquakes so far, with a force of 7.4 on the Richter scale. The subsequent tsunami wave has taken the toll of hundreds of human lives; the total number of affected people could reach several hundreds of thousands, according to some estimates even two million. Caritas Czech Republic has therefore launched a fundraising appeal to support the victims of the tsunami as well as the restoration of the country.

The tsunami has caused huge material damage; there are hundreds of ruined houses in the area. There is an urgent need to provide basic hygiene facilities, the supplies of usable water and food. The area however has suffered cyclical intensive earthquakes from late July. Until now all efforts to restore the country have been swept away by new quakes. This has made the situation even more critical.

„Caritas Czech Republic, together with partner Caritas organizations, has become part of international aid, requested by the Indonesian government. The specific form of the Czech aid will be agreed in agreement with our partner organization Caritas Indonesia,“ says Lukáš Curylo, the director of Caritas Czech Republic.
