The war in Ukraine continues, bringing devastating consequences for civilians. Millions have lost their homes, and thousands of schools, hospitals, and houses have been damaged or destroyed. Many Ukrainians have become internally displaced and now live in temporary and inadequate conditions without basic necessities. They lack safe housing, access to clean water, heating, and medical care. Caritas Czech Republic has been providing long-term support directly on the ground — repairing damaged homes and restoring healthcare facilities, building modular shelters, securing access to drinking water, and helping to establish mental health centres.

Why donate now

  • More than 12 million people urgently need help
    – that’s every third person in Ukraine
  • Air raid sirens go off up to twice a day
    – the average alert lasts 2 hours, but some last up to 10
  • Nearly 4 million people are displaced within Ukraine
    – living in temporary shelters, searching for a way to reclaim dignity
  • Civilian sites are under attack
    – including schools, hospitals, aid centres, and homes
  • The healthcare system is overwhelmed
    – Hospitals and rehabilitation centres need repairs and expansion
  • Living in fear affects mental health
    – people need support and a sense of stability

Evžen Diviš
Attacks on both military and civilian targets have intensified in recent months. Residential buildings are being destroyed, the number of dead and injured is rising, and new waves of evacuation are underway. Damaged structures must be repaired or replaced, and the wounded place an even greater burden on an already overstretched healthcare system. The psychosocial strain on Ukrainian society is growing, and it will likely take decades to fully recover from the consequences. Our work continues, the needs are increasing, and we see it as our duty to persevere in providing help.

Protective helmets, suits and gloves. Firefighting equipment from Czechia helps firefighters in Ukraine thanks to Caritas

The work of Ukrainian firefighters changed overnight after the invasion of Russian troops. Instead of fighting ordinary fires, most of their work now consists of large-scale interventions after the impact of Russian missiles and rockets. Special equipment worth 5 million CZK, provided by Caritas Czech Republic in cooperation with the Czech Fire and Rescue Corps, helps firefighters in Ukraine cope with non-standard interventions.

After nearly a year in emergency accommodation, a family from Kharkiv has decent housing

After the Russian invasion began, Krystina's first priority was to ensure the safety of her young son David. So she and her husband did not hesitate and immediately set off from their home town of Kharkiv on a journey to safety. After three days on a train, they arrived in Mukachevo, where they found refuge in a student dormitory. Krystina and her son left it after almost a year, when they moved into one of the modular houses built by Caritas Czech Republic in the city.

The most important thing is to talk with them, says a caregiver about lonely seniors in Moldova

It is hard not to notice the beautiful chateau with a park near the main road when arriving in Taul, a small town in northern Moldova. It is the largest park in the country. Just outside the entrance is a light green building that is occupied by the St. Juliana Home Care Centre. Here, Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova is helping lonely seniors.
