The war in Ukraine continues, bringing devastating consequences for civilians. Millions have lost their homes, and thousands of schools, hospitals, and houses have been damaged or destroyed. Many Ukrainians have become internally displaced and now live in temporary and inadequate conditions without basic necessities. They lack safe housing, access to clean water, heating, and medical care. Caritas Czech Republic has been providing long-term support directly on the ground — repairing damaged homes and restoring healthcare facilities, building modular shelters, securing access to drinking water, and helping to establish mental health centres.

Why donate now

  • More than 12 million people urgently need help
    – that’s every third person in Ukraine
  • Air raid sirens go off up to twice a day
    – the average alert lasts 2 hours, but some last up to 10
  • Nearly 4 million people are displaced within Ukraine
    – living in temporary shelters, searching for a way to reclaim dignity
  • Civilian sites are under attack
    – including schools, hospitals, aid centres, and homes
  • The healthcare system is overwhelmed
    – Hospitals and rehabilitation centres need repairs and expansion
  • Living in fear affects mental health
    – people need support and a sense of stability

Evžen Diviš
Attacks on both military and civilian targets have intensified in recent months. Residential buildings are being destroyed, the number of dead and injured is rising, and new waves of evacuation are underway. Damaged structures must be repaired or replaced, and the wounded place an even greater burden on an already overstretched healthcare system. The psychosocial strain on Ukrainian society is growing, and it will likely take decades to fully recover from the consequences. Our work continues, the needs are increasing, and we see it as our duty to persevere in providing help.

Caritas Czech Republic built modular houses in Transcarpathia for people who fled the war

5,9 million people are still displaced within Ukraine. Many of them found shelter in the Transcarpathian region, but not all of them have dignified living conditions, staying in overcrowded dormitories or gyms. Last year, Caritas Czech Republic together with the Transcarpathian Regional Council and the Mukachevo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church started building modular houses for people who were forced to flee their homes and found safety in the Transcarpathian region.

The initiative is part of Caritas Czech Republic's winter support activities for Ukrainian refugees and aims to cover the additional needs that winter usually brings for people.

Best of 2022 in Caritas Czech Republic

It sounds like a cliché, but 2022 really was a year like no other. At Caritas Czech Republic, we were fully immersed in helping people affected by the war in Ukraine. We immediately sent humanitarian aid to the country, and we also supported refugees from Ukraine in Moldova and in the Czech Republic. Our help did not stop there. We supported farmers in Zambia to withstand climate change, helped people in Iraq rebuild their livelihoods, and much more. Take a look at our biggest achievements of 2022.
