Caritas CR in cooperation with the Archdiocesan Caritas Olomouc has been working in Haiti since 2010, when the country suffered a devastating earthquake that killed more than 200 000 people. After basic humanitarian supplies (food, water, and shelter) provided immediately after the earthquake, was Caritas CR focused on the reconstruction of the country (e.g. by supporting small farmers), education and health care.

During the years 2012 and 2013 Caritas CR helped to restore agricultural and livestock production, supported both capacity of teachers and level of education of children from Morne and Bateau. Caritas CR contributed to the overall improvement of the educational system in Haiti until the end of June 2014.

Caritas Czech Republic gives 300,000 CZK to help victims of hurricane Matthew which hit the island state of Haiti. „The amount is determined for supporting schools and purchase of humanitarian assistance,“ says Lukáš Curylo, Director of Caritas Czech Republic.

Caritas Internationalis secretary general, Michel Roy, visited the south-west of Haiti three weeks after Hurricane Matthew hit. Here’s what he saw: “Devastation” is the one word that kept coming to mind as I travelled through south-west Haiti, where Hurricane Matthew had passed. It made me think of the landscape in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bomb had been dropped. Where there was once a flourishing vegetation, there was now a kind of a desert. Caritas is back in Haiti. Repairs of houses for families affected by hurricane are beginning now.

Haiti, Olomouc – In October, Hurricane Matthew destroyed a large number of homes in the south and the northwest of Haiti. The homes of affected families are under repair thanks to Caritas of the Archdiocese of Olomouc (ACHO) and Czech donors. Caritas’ project for home and school reconstructions intends to help more than 700 Haitians, it has a budget of one million Czech crowns.
