Patchouli Growers in Aceh, Indonesia

Patchouli is an essential oil used in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and insect repellents. It is in high demand around the world and cannot be reproduced in the laboratory. The patchouli shrub requires nutrient rich soil, high levels of rainfall and adequate sunlight to thrive. These conditions combine to form a paradise for the plant on the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra: the Aceh Province.

South Sudan needs help

Although South Sudan is a very young state (founded on 19 July 2011), it is trying to catch up with more developed countries. However, progress has not occurred as quickly as expected. Veronika Jelínková, the program manager for Africa and the Near East, visited the country in September 2012 and tried to find out how Caritas Czech Republic could help assist the country and which sectors could be helped.

Ensuring food security in Afghanistan

Caritas CR has been operating in Afghanistan since August 2012. In cooperation with the local non-governmental organization Afghan Women Resource Center and the Slovak humanitarian organization People in Peril, it aims to increase food security within central Afghan provinces Parwan and Kapisa.

Development of Social Work in Mongolian prisons

During the fall of 2012 Caritas Czech Republic began this project, which aims to humanize the conditions in Mongolian detention centres. Our project is inspired and builds on the success of previous projects in Mongolia, where Caritas CR has been developing the system of social work and education. The new project is co-financed by the EU.


When Isaac comes to Haiti

During the Atlantic hurricane season, Haiti is hit by wave of tropical storms and hurricanes every year from mid-August to mid-November. This year Tropical Storm Isaac struck in the morning on Friday August 25th. It resulted in 13 dead and 27 wounded.
