New library for Zambia students

New library for Zambia students

In September 2017, Caritas Czech Republic began the construction of a Library at Mayukwayuka Primary School in Kaoma District Western province. Mayukwaukwa primary school provides basic education to more than 2000 refugees including the Zambian host community children from grade one to nine in Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement. However, since the establishment of the school there has never been a library in the whole district until now.

LibraryThe library construction was funded by the US Embassy under the Julia Taft Grant. We work closely with the District Education Board Secretary, Ministry of Works and Supplies and the head teacher during the construction.
The library has been equipped with furniture; some of the furniture was made within the Refugee settlement with an aim to support local carpenters improving their livelihood. Caritas Czech Republic has also managed to procure books for the library, an initiative to collect books by sending request for book donations was done, and the response was very good. CCR was contacted form the Czech Embassy, Finnish Embassy, Japanese Embassy and the Zambia Library Service. In addition, books previously donated by World vision are part of the collection as well. The library collection is composed of books used in the Zambian school curriculum ranging from grade one to nine, motivational books, comics and health related books.

The library was officially opened on 15th August 2018, with a color handover ceremony. The District Education Board Secretary was invited at the event as well as other implementing partners in the Refugee Settlement. CCR was thanked greatly for this project and it is evident that the project is a great contribution to the school, the settlement at large and the district since this library is the only operating.

LibraryCaritas Czech Republic appreciated the funders of this project the US Embassy and partners who have made book donations and other parties that were involved in the completion of this project namely the Japanese Embassy. Czech Embassy, Zambia Library Service, Finnish Embassy, Ministry of Works & Supplies and the Ministry of Education.
