Supporting a family is no longer just a dream
Eman lives in a very traditional region of Iraq. She has always wanted to become a seamstress. However, becoming independent is not easy for women in Iraq. Thanks to the Caritas Czech Republic, Eman attended a business course and learnt how to run her own business. In addition, she received a small start-up grant, which she used to buy a sewing machine and fabrics.
Today, this mother of 5 is a sought-after seamstress and helps to provide for her family. "I am happy to contribute to the family budget. I plan to expand my business and offer more fabrics for customers to choose from," says Eman happily.
The art of sewing is changing the lives of two generations
Beya lives in a refugee settlement in Zambia. Refugees have very few opportunities to make a living in the country. In addition, Beya had no skills to provide a living for her and her three children. But thanks to the help of the Caritas, she learnt to be a seamstress and that changed her life.
"I had no skill that I could get paid for. When I heard about Caritas supporting refugees in our settlement through offering skill courses, I immediately applied," Beya says gratefully. She successfully completed the sewing course and now sews shirts, skirts and dresses. In addition, she has learned to weave baskets. "I can finally feed my children well, send them to school and buy them clothes," she says.
