One human family - Food for all

One human family - Food for allThe first and most prominent UN Millennium Development Goal has been to decrease the number of all people living in poverty and affected by hunger. This means ensuring all humans the right for food and in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger the support of political human rights, economic and social rights is crucial.

Charities in the Czech Republic are involved in supporting and arranging the right for food by taking part in the international campaign One family – Food for everyone and the forthcoming project Ecofair. The goal of One family – Food for everyone is to support human dignity by ending hunger in all continents by 2030. For Ecofair, the aim is to develop education modules on the right for food in university educational schemas, which will be examined in Germany, Czech Republic, Croatia, Belgium, the Netherlands and afterwards other EU countries.

'One Human Family, Food for All' campaign message

The “One Human Family, Food for All” campaign has been able to bring together Caritas organisations from around the world to work together as one in raising awareness of world hunger. Universities invite foreign experts to the lectures about "Right to Food"

Currently, lectures about the “Right to food” are taking place at partner universities in the Czech Republic and also abroad. Lectures are sponsored by Caritas Czech Republic as part of the activities of Eco Fair Trade. They can be head by students, academic staff and interested members of the public.

Study on the “rights to food” contributes to a broader discussion

The study “Foreign direct investment to agricultural-food network in India and Sub-Saharan Africa”, was published in January 2015 by the German organisation Bischöfliches Hilfswerk MISEREOR, Mendel University in Brno and Caritas Czech Republic. The study and a research colloquium held in February are just some of the activities carried out through the EcoFairTrade project, a project focused on the rights to food.

World Food Day: The End of Hunger by 2025

On World Food Day, Caritas Internationalis, the international network consisting of 164 national Caritas offices, issued the statement that the world has the means to ensure the end of hunger by 2025. The organization argued that there are now no excuses for the fact that 805 million people still have nothing to eat.

Cooking classes and excited cooks

Cooking classes are very popular and frequently used in Caritas' organizations. They are often held in asylum houses and they're meant to assist mothers who are in a difficult situation. Cooking classes are offered as a programme in St. Vincent's Centre for people with mental disabilities in Olomouc.

Food for homeless people

St. Theresa's Homeless Shelter is a drop­-in day centre and a hostel for homeless people. It is located in Karlín in Prague for people who find themselves in a difficult life situation, and unable to cope on their own. The main activity of the Shelter is providing food. There are dozens of similar institutions throughout the Czech Republic.

Not only bread for mothers with children

On Monday afternoons, workers of Lovosice Parish Caritas go to one of the bakeries in Usti region to get quantities of unsold bread and pastry that would otherwise be thrown away. They purchase it for a symbolic amount. Depending on how much was obtained, they give mostly sweet pastry to institutions that are run by the Caritas. One of these is a shelter for women and mothers with children right in Lovosice.
