Last April an earthquake in Nepal damaged or completely destroyed schools. 3,131 from overall 5,166 classrooms need to be restored only in the most affected region, Sindhupalčok. Due to the support of Czech donors, Caritas Czech Republic started to work on reconstruction of 31 schools together with Caritas Switzerland.
The reconstruction of schools will take place until the end of the year 2018 in six villages of the Sindhupalčok, namely villages Duwachaur, Helambu, Ichok, Mahankal, Palchok and Talamarang.
All the new buildings are constructed according to the standards of protection against earthquakes and are built from local materials with the help of locals. The building plans of the schools were created by the Nepalese building company in cooperation with the Swiss company Skat which has rich experience with the reconstructions of buildings in places affected by natural disasters such as an earthquake.
Close cooperation with the management of these schools is expected throughout the entire process. Their representatives will participate in planning, construction itself and in monitoring of the whole project. Afterwards, 5,985 pupils will have the possibility to attend safe schools in the area of Sindhupalčok.
In the course of the following three years, renovation and reconstruction of damaged buildings and 296 classrooms will take place as well as restoration of water supplies and the construction of toilets. Hygienic conditions will also improve in the schools.
The total cost of the project is 8,939,248 euros, that is around 250 million CZK. Caritas Czech Republic contributes with the amount of approximately 6,6 million CZK that had collected. The rest of the resources is provided by Caritas Switzerland and its partners.
