The Catholic Church together with Nassa/ Caritas Philippines started preparing for the possible devastating impact of typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) that is approaching to Philippine Islands from the east. Nassa/Caritas Philippines donated 1,954 million of Philippines Pesos from the Church fund for special events/occasions and also from Caritas International funds so that it would be possible to buy what is needed for areas threatened with the typhoon.
Philippines Office PAGASA established 14 provinces in 4 areas where typhoon Ruby is expected to strike. The areas concerned are Leyte, Iloilo, Cebu and Aklan in the provinces of East Samar (where Caritas Czech Republic operates). All of these areas were struck by typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda) last year.
„"Considering the wide area that could be hit, the money may not be sufficient. That is why we are waiting to see what damages will result after the typhoon hits land,“ pointed out Josephino Ignacio, the department head for humanitarian crisis of Nassa/Caritas Philippines.
Since Wednesday, the province through its 14 Diocesan Centres for Social Service (DSACs) has started to review its plans and possibilities. Coordination meetings also took place with all government and non-government organisations.
Part of the planning is also to recruit immediate help and possible help from volunteers who would give specific information to affected inhabitants. Emergency committees in the provinces are continuously monitored and the situation evaluated. Furthermore, local groups and other employees of Diocesan centres will help with evacuating families to safe areas.
„"We are already thinking of appealing to all 85 Dioceses for assistance to support the provinces where typhoon Ruby will hit. We can't eliminate issuing an appeal to Caritas International if necessary," explained Ignacio, the head of Caritas Philippines.
