GIVE A MEANINGFUL GIFT

Gifts that change lives

Do you like to give gifts that truly make a difference? Meaningful Gift is a great choice. While your loved ones will be happy with the gift certificate and enjoy the good feeling it brings, your financial support will help people on their way to self-sufficiency and give them a chance for a better future. Whether it is supporting children's education, developing business skills, or helping farmers cope with the effects of climate change—every gift makes a difference. “The Meaningful Gift is a way to give your loved ones something special while supporting people who need it most. Thanks to your help, these people can gain the tools and skills they need to stand on their own feet and secure their livelihood,” says Lenka Pipková, manager of foreign communications for Caritas Czech Republic.

Farmers across the world lose livelihoods because of climate change

We offer Meaningful Gifts in several categories, ranging from healthcare and education to gifts of climate change adaptation and environmental protection, as well as support for self-sufficiency. The gifts align with our core mission of helping people in disadvantaged circumstances become self-reliant, whether by starting their businesses or through educational courses. Humanitarian gifts that include food and hygiene packages primarily used in response to disasters and crises are also popular.

1. Women's self-sufficiency

Standing on their own two feet is not easy for women in many countries. A gift of self-sufficiency allows them to participate in financial literacy or business skills courses and start their own businesses. This way, they can become independent. Rana, an Iraqi woman, dreamt of opening her own educational center. But in the conservative region of Iraq where she lives, women are often confined to traditional household roles, even though many of them aspire to run their businesses. Thanks to her perseverance and the support of Caritas Czech Republic, Rana finally succeeded. Today, she employs ten teachers in her educational center which attracts students from all around the region. "Their parents thank me for founding the center and giving their children an opportunity to learn. I tell them to thank Caritas for making it possible," Rana smiles.

2. Home care for elderly people or access to healthcare through telemedicine

A few years ago, I could manage most things on my own. Today, every step is exhausting for me, says 73-year-old Liudmila, who lives alone in rural Moldova. Thanks to the care workers from a nearby home care center, who visit her at least five times a week, she can live the autumn of her life with dignity. The care workers help her with hygiene and household chores, and they also enable her to consult her doctor using a tablet. Specialists are often only available in large hospitals. Liudmila would not be able to travel to Chisinau for a consultation alone,” says one care worker, Lucia.

There are many lonely elderly people like Liudmila in Moldova. Caritas Czech Republic provides them with necessary care and social contact. Donate to home care centre care, remote medical consultations, or care of an occupational therapist, and you will give elderly people a peaceful and dignified old age.

3. Craft courses as a path to livelihood

Mastering a craft is a way to start a business and become self-sufficient. A gift in the form of a contribution to a sewing, beekeeping, cooking, or fridge repair course allows people in difficult conditions to learn a new trade and support themselves. Deborah, a young cook, lives in the Mayukwayukwa refugee camp in Zambia. Finding a source of livelihood there is not easy. Thanks to a five-month cooking course supported by Caritas Czech Republic, Deborah gained the necessary skills and the courage to open her own bistro. I learnt many useful things,” says Deborah happily in her small bistro. Her story proves that with initial support and determination, it is possible to succeed even in a challenging environment like a refugee camp.

4. Resilience to climate change

Climate change dramatically affects farmers in many countries. While they once successfully farmed their land, the changing climate is making it increasingly difficult for them to continue to support themselves. Measures that help affected farmers adapt to climate change are, therefore, a vital form of support. “I do not know what the coming years will bring. I fear the drought will destroy everything. Temperatures are constantly rising, it is 50 degrees Celsius in the summer now, and in the future, it could get even hotter—that would destroy our crops completely,” says Jibran, whose family has been farming in northern Iraq for hundreds of years.Without support, we would no longer be able to farm successfully. We need greenhouses and irrigation systems because climate change affects how we used to farm,” adds the farmer.

Caritas Czech Republic provides farmers in Iraq and Zambia with special training to help them adapt to climate change. They learn which crops can withstand drought and how to farm efficiently even during droughts. Caritas also provides drought-resistant seeds to help farmers continue to support themselves.

5. Support education

The path out of poverty leads through education. Children growing up in disadvantaged conditions do not have as many opportunities to change their destiny and secure a source of livelihood for the future. Supporting school attendance, training in specific skills, and financial literacy and business courses are a clear path to self-sufficiency. Give children, who otherwise would not be able to attend school, a chance for a better future by donating to their education or schoolbooks. supporting community centers and extracurricular activities also give children a better start in life and a chance to break free from poverty.
