Roger had to leave his native Angola due to the civil war. Today, he lives in Zambia with his large family and earns a living through farming. Thanks to the income from his farm, he is able to support his children’s education. Caritas Czech Republic provided him with training, helped him expand his knowledge, and enabled easier travel to his workplace.
Farming provides Roger and his family with enough food
Roger fled Angola in 1987 because of the local conflict and settled in the Meheba refugee settlement in Zambia. Since then, he has been farming his own land. “I grow bananas, sweet potatoes and cassava. My work has become more efficient thanks to the help from Caritas Czech Republic,” says Roger.
He lives with his large family – he has 12 children. Farming enables him to provide enough food for his loved ones. Moreover, he has managed to earn some money, which allowed him to contribute to his children’s school supplies, significantly improving their learning conditions. With our support, another farmer, Conceptor, is also able to provide for her family.
Caritas Czech Republic provided Roger with training and his own bicycle
Thanks to the training provided by Caritas Czech Republic, Roger learned new skills that help him manage his farming more effectively. We also gave the farmer some crops, especially beans and sweet potatoes. Similarly, we have supported Loveness in her farming efforts in Zambia.
Perhaps the most helpful thing for Roger was the bicycle provided by Caritas Czech Republic. It allows him to travel more easily from home to his field and saves him time.
Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia
Zambia is home to over 100,000 refugees, many of whom make a living through agriculture or craftsmanship. Caritas Czech Republic helps them improve their businesses, enabling them to become self-reliant and earn a livelihood. Like Roger, Laurinda also fled Angola due to war and now works as a seamstress in Zambia.
