Caritas Czech Republic provides food aid to more than 10,000 families in Syria

After nearly 14 years of war, the situation in Syria is undergoing dramatic changes. The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime has brought hope for a better future to many Syrians but also presents new challenges. Millions of people lack basic necessities such as access to food, clean water, and shelter. Caritas Czech Republic, along with local partners, is working intensively to mitigate the consequences of this crisis.

Destroyed infrastructure complicates the lives of thousands of families

In recent days, fighting around Aleppo and Idlib has significantly damaged essential infrastructure. Among the affected facilities are bakeries that provided bread—a staple food for thousands of families. Lack of electricity, fuel, and disrupted supply chains have forced many bakeries to cease operations, exacerbating an already critical food insecurity situation.

"People lack basic essentials. In villages around Idlib and Aleppo, which have long been on the front line, everything is destroyed. Local residents need bread and other ready-to-eat food," describes Mohammad Hafed from Caritas Czech Republic in Syria.

Caritas Czech Republic, in cooperation with the partner organisation SARD, is ensuring the distribution of bread to more than 10,000 families in the affected areas. "Bread is indispensable in these conditions. Therefore, we strive to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most, including people with disabilities and the elderly people," says Kateřina Velíšková, regional manager of Caritas Czech Republic for the Middle East.

Distribution is carried out under strict security measures. For families unable to reach distribution points, bread is delivered directly to their homes.

Caritas Czech Republic has been helping in Syria for a long time

In addition to emergency humanitarian aid, Caritas Czech Republic in Syria focuses on rebuilding infrastructure and providing long-term solutions. This year, we have helped improve access to drinking water for thousands of local residents in northwestern Syria. Due to bombing and improper maintenance of water sources, locals suffer from a lack of clean drinking water and do not have access to adequate hygiene.

Improving water stations in Syria

In the Al-Bab area of Aleppo governorate, in cooperation with the partner organisation Takaful Al Sham (TAS) and with financial assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, we ensured the repair and maintenance of the Shweiha water station and surrounding water networks. In addition, we distribute hygiene kits and conduct awareness campaigns to help local people better protect their health.

We have been helping in Syria since 2013. Initially, we were involved in improving the healthcare sector, and last year we were also active in helping to repair the damage after the catastrophic earthquake. Working with partner organisations, we have been able to create a network of volunteers trained in humanitarian aid.

In Syria, as part of the country's development, we have also supported young Syrians to set up their own businesses and earn a living in a country where job opportunities are scarce.

We can also help thanks to our donors. Thank you to everyone who decides to help.
