Caritas Czech Republic immediately launched a collection to help the affected people. 3,000 people lost their lives, and thousands more were injured. The epicentre of the earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, was near the historic city of Marrakech. At least 3,000 people have lost their lives, but unfortunately, the number is likely to continue to rise. Over two thousand people are injured, many of them in critical condition. People are still trapped in the rubble, with survivors trying to help them and clear the debris by hand before equipment arrives. Some buildings in the historic city of Marrakech have been damaged, including part of the famous mosque. A number of them have collapsed.
Caritas Czech Republic is ready to provide immediate assistance and join in the provision of humanitarian aid. Caritas Czech Republic is launching a collection to help people affected by the earthquake in Morocco. Donations can be made to the humanitarian collection account number 55660022/0800, VS 400. Safe gathering places, shelter, hot food, water and clothing are needed for people who have lost their homes. Caritas Czech Republic is also sending representatives to the site.
The epicentre of the tremors was in the High Atlas Mountains, about 70 kilometres southwest of the city of Marrakech. This city of 840,000 inhabitants is also severely damaged. Rescuers are still uncovering the rubble of houses that collapsed as a result of the earthquake. Many people are still trapped underneath. The earthquake affected six provinces where 10 million people live. It is the strongest earthquake since 1960 when tremors around Morocco's historic port of Agadir reached a magnitude of 5.8 and caused thousands of casualties. No earthquake of magnitude six or higher has occurred within a 500-kilometre radius since 1900.
