Enoch has been a farmer for almost 10 years. Recently he has been struggling with droughts that threaten his agriculture. Caritas Czech Republic provided him with resilient crops and training, which taught him how to farm efficiently and sustainably. Today, he successfully grows several types of crops, sells them at markets, and manages a seed bank.
Enoch has been farming for nearly 10 years
Enoch is originally from central Zambia, but he moved to the northeast of the country in hopes of finding employment in the mines. Instead, he was given the opportunity to grow crops there. This has allowed him to be a farmer for nearly 10 years.
"I grow mainly maize, beans, and sweet potatoes. However, in recent years, my crops have been affected by droughts," Enoch describes the problem he is facing. Climate change brings many difficulties to farmers in Zambia as well as in other countries.
Caritas Czech Republic supported Enoch with new resilient plant seeds. The farmer also received a bicycle from us, which helps him and his family move around more easily. He also underwent training, which he highly appreciates. "Caritas Czech Republic provided me with training, thanks to which I learned a lot about sustainable crop farming," Enoch recalls. This helps him manage the challenges brought on by the climate crisis more easily.
Enoch sells his crops at markets
Farmer Enoch grows a large amount of crops, and he sells a significant portion of it at markets or to other people in his community. In addition to growing and selling crops, he also manages a seed bank. This allows him to cover all his bills and other expenses.
"I am grateful to Caritas Czech Republic for their help. Thanks to their support, I farm more efficiently and can earn a living," says Enoch. Caritas Czech Republic helps other farmers in Zambia in the fight against climate change as well.
Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia
Caritas Czech Republic helps farmers in Zambia gain valuable knowledge to improve their farming practices. Among other things, we focus on increasing agricultural yields and providing specialized training. For example, we helped Mwiba learn how to better adapt farming to the changing climate. Today he teaches this to other farmers in the area.
