Jasphine has certainly not had an easy life, but she has never given up. Despite her visual impairment, she manages to care for her three children while continuing her education. However, due to a lack of financial resources, it was not easy for her. She therefore joined a savings group, through which she managed to save enough funds to continue her schooling – thanks also to the support from Caritas Czech Republic.
Young Jasphine is the mother of three children
Jasphine is a young woman living in Zambia with her grandmother and her three children. When she was just nine years old, she suddenly began having problems with her vision, suffering from itching and eye pain. Soon after, she lost her sight completely. Around the same time, her mother passed away. Jasphine, who was only in third grade at the time, had her life turned upside down.
Nevertheless, Jasphine did not give up. At a young age, she gave birth to three children, whom she now cares for with her grandmother’s help. She earns a living by sewing and selling mats. She has also remained committed to her education, which is very important to her. Today, she is studying in the tenth grade.
Jasphine is a member of a savings group
Jasphine struggled with a lack of financial resources and could not afford to pay for all school-related costs and supplies. Her grandmother therefore suggested that she join the local savings group, just as she had done.
These groups, introduced in remote parts of Zambia by Caritas Czech Republic, help people who find it difficult to access a traditional bank loan. Group members save together and take out loans from the collective savings at a small interest rate. The money is primarily used for education or entrepreneurship. The savings group has also helped George.
The savings group enabled young Jasphine to continue her education by supporting her with funds from the education fund. This allowed her to pay all the school fees and other school-related expenses.

In Zambia, we focus not only on supporting education, but also on helping smallholder farmers, entrepreneurs, and refugees fleeing war and poverty from neighbouring countries. We have helped, for example, Benza, who fled the war in Congo and now supports her family as a hairdresser.
