Livay from Zambia teaches his community how to save and manage money better

Livay has become the leader of a so-called savings group, which enables people in remote parts of Zambia to save money collectively and later access a bank loan. First, Livay learned how to manage his finances through our training. After that, he started sharing his newly acquired knowledge with dozens of people in his community. The saved up money significantly helps people in Zambia on their journey towards a more fulfilling life.

52-year-old Livay lives in Zambia with his wife and seven children. He owns a farm where he grows various crops and takes care of livestock.

His greatest contribution to the community is his membership in a savings group. For people in remote areas of Zambia, it is often very difficult to obtain a standard bank loan. That is why Caritas Czech Republic introduces savings groups in villages, allowing local residents to save together and later take out loans with lower interest. The borrowed money is primarily used to grow their businesses, repair their homes, or ensure education for their children.

Livay initially hesitated to join a savings group, but after learning about how the groups work and about the benefits they bring to the community, he changed his mind. Today, he even leads the group.

Livay completed training provided by Caritas Czech Republic. “I learned how to manage a budget, save properly, and generally handle my savings,” says Livay, describing his newly acquired knowledge. During the training, he also learned how to lead a group, which has helped him greatly.

Thanks to support from Caritas Czech Republic, Livay can now pass on his financial knowledge to others. People in the area can save together, which benefits the entire community.

Savings groups in Zambia

Caritas Czech Republic helps people in Zambia gain knowledge about saving and financial management. We provided training to Edith, who, thanks to her new skills, was able to set up as many as 14 savings groups. She became the lead trainer in her community and helped hundreds of people achieve financial independence.

The savings group initiative also helped George, who was able to access funds through his group, bringing him closer to his dream of attending university. The self-reliance of locals is one of Caritas Czech Republic’s goals in Zambia.

Thank you for helping with us.
