He is only 26 years old, but he already knows what he enjoys – working with people, modern technology, and fixing things others would throw away. Nabaz from Duhok in Iraqi Kurdistan opened a small mobile phone shop together with a friend. They sell new phones, repair old ones, and thanks to the training provided by Caritas Czech Republic, Nabaz can now even make some replacement parts himself.
Printing for a better future
Iraq continues to struggle with the consequences of years of conflict, long after the fighting has ended. Many people have lost their livelihoods, and thousands of young people lack access to quality education and decent job opportunities. In a region where young people make up a large part of the population, this poses a serious challenge.
That is why Caritas Czech Republic supported vocational training programmes in the country – to help young people gain practical skills and increase their chances of finding employment or starting their own business. Nabaz is one of those who succeeded.
“Before, I was doing nothing. I didn’t have a job. Now I work full time, every day,” says Nabaz proudly, showing off the shop he runs with his business partner. He enjoys his work, especially when customers walk through the door.
It all started with a training supported by Caritas Czech Republic. The course lasted 31 days, during which Nabaz learned to use a 3D printer and a special glass-cutting machine. Thanks to this, he can now offer not only phone repairs, but also custom-made protective cases and small replacement parts.
“I was lucky to take part in the training. I learned a lot of technical things – how to operate the machines, how to print phone accessories. It was a very good training,” Nabaz recalls.
He now uses the skills he gained every day. “I can make a phone case, design a small replacement part, and help customers where others can’t,” he explains.
Looking ahead? His own company
Today, the shop is open every day and Nabaz spends most of his time there. Together with his friend, they also employ one staff member. And in the future? Nabaz has a clear vision – he wants to start his own company and expand the business with more phone brands and services.
“One day, I want to have my own company. I’m still learning, gaining experience, and I believe I can make it. For now, I’m doing what I love,” he adds.
Caritas Czech Republic in Iraq
Just like Nabaz, many people in Iraq are getting back on their feet and rebuilding their livelihoods after the conflict. Caritas Czech Republic supported Iraqis on their journey to self-sufficiency. For example, Rama revived his family's carpentry workshop after years of war, and Rajaa opened her own bakery to support her children.
