On the 24th of July Caritas Czech Republic, together with Lewanika School of Midwifery, organised a ceremonial handing-over of study tools. The school’s headmaster, Mrs. Rosemary V. Mwanza, opened the ceremony with words of thanks and spoke about the significance of cooperation with Caritas Czech Republic in supporting obstetrics in the Western province.
Afterwards, the deputy headmaster of the Lewanika General Hospital, Dr. Soko, emphasised the importance of long term cooperation and support between the Czech Republic and Lewanika Hospital. In particular, he stressed the importance of support in the area of mother care and child care through methods such as supplying hospital beds or sharing practical information between Czech specialists and medical staff in Mongu. Following this, Tea Tihounová, the chief of the Caritas Czech Republic mission summarised the project’s activities and the work of Czech development assistance in the Western province. She highlighted the importance of mutual effort in managing the school, the hospital, its employees and also the team of Caritas Czech Republic, which will hopefully lead to a reduction in maternal and neonatal deaths in the Mongu district.
The handing over of 24 teaching models, 6 wallpapers and 20 books for students, amounting to a total value of almost 120,000 CZK, was attended by employees of the school, the Lewanika General Hospital and the district health authority. The school equipment will help obstetrics students to better understand the secrets of conception, embryonic development, childbirth, physiological and anatomical changes in the female body during pregnancy, details of male and female sexual organs, a baby’s head, a uterine pelvis and much more. Teachers and clinical instructors whole-heartedly accepted the new models which will enable them to better explain the subject matter through demonstrations on the three-dimensional models.
Caritas Czech Republic supports Lewanika School of Midwifery through the project “Improving Quality and Access to Mother and Child healthcare in Western Province, Zambia”, which is financed thanks to the support from Czech Development Agency.
