In Gagauzia, an autonomous region in the south of Moldova, young people are versed very little in the political life and are unaware in ways to participate in it. Therefore, Caritas Czech Republic has initiated some activities there to support the development of civil society and democratic rights.
The need to focus on youngsters and their involvement in decision-making processes came to light after a referendum held in Gagauzia on February 3, 2014, in which 97 % of voters demanded independence and closer ties with Russia in case Moldova joins the EU. Based on the outcome of the elections, a local nonprofit organization Success made a survey among people younger than 35 years in five Gagauzian municipalities, which showed that 88 % of respondents didn't participate in the referendum and 32 % of the participants voted for either independence or partnership with Russia. The behavior of young voters can be explained by the manipulation by political leaders or the inability to critically evaluate information. Moreover, after signing the agreements on joining the EU, considerable political tension has risen here, as expected.
Hence, Caritas Czech Republic will focus on increasing political and civic activities in elections and other decision-making processes. Young people will also be presented the attitudes and values of the EU and the advantages stemming from its membership. Gagauzian youth would be able to realize its value and its role in the society, as well as learn to represent itself and broader social interests in front of political leaders of the region.
The programme will include for example, an information campaign for ten schools on the topic “Week of Democratic Values of the EU”, an exhibition called “Gagauzia Youth for Europe” or Summer School of Political Involvement. There will be accompanying activities until the end of 2016.
