“I arrived in Jordan after a long and exhausting journey from Syria to border of Jordan … we entered the country illegally because we have left our homeland without any documents, so we were sent to a refugee camp,” Dalal begins her story.
Dalal, a Syrian refugee, arrived to Jordan the 6th of April 2013, along with her four children, two boys and two girls ranging in age from 4 to 14, with her mother and seven siblings and sister in law. Her husband died several years ago and from that moment she became the head of the family.
She experienced severe times in the refugee camp. “There is a total chaos and certainly, it’s not a place for human beings... my mother is ill, she needs a regular health care and the air in the camp wasn’t good for her at all,” explains Dalal.
Thanks to the help of one Jordan family, her whole family was released on bail from the camp. They all left for the region of Mafraq, where they succeeded in renting a small house. “The house, we found, is too small for fourteen people, but we have no other choice because we need some shelter,” says Dalal.
Her fourteen-years-old son works in a store, and the salary he gets per day is barely enough to buy the bread for the family. “It’s [a] big issue for us to buy food and pay for the house at the same time. We are a big family and I need to ensure the food especially for my little children,” she explains.
Dalal approached a Jordan Caritas center in the region of Mafraq where she was accepted and registered to receive help. “I get a food-voucher from the Caritas for my family every month. With this voucher, I can go and choose the food I need for my children.”
Dalal bought meat, chicken and vegetables. “My children were all amazed when they saw the food I got for these vouchers… it meant a lot for me and certainly, it relieved us in the hard living conditions here,” underlines Dalal.
