Afghanistan was one of the priority countries for Czech development cooperation. Caritas Czech Republic (CR) has already conducted the project here in the past. The project of 2012 was focused on increasing food security in the central provinces of the country. 

Caritas CR cooperated with the local non-governmental organization Afghan Women Resource Center and the Slovak organization People in Peril.

Badakhshan is one of the poorest areas of Afghanistan, which often experiences floods, snowstorms and landslides. Local valleys and mountains complicate access to all areas of the province and they are accustomed to earthquakes. As a rule, it doesn’t lead to high loss of life because of the small population. Throughout Badakshan live less than a million people.

Number of earthquake´s victims over three hundred to date

On 26th of October the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan was hit by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. Despite the fact that the epicenter was near the city of Feyzabad in Afghanistan, the capital of province Badakhshan, there are more victims reported in Pakistan.

Afghanistan hit by an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale

On the morning of October 26th 2015, in the morning, northern Afghanistan was hit by a devastating earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located near the town of Feyzabad, the capital of Badakhshan province in the Hindu Kush region (269 kilometers northeast of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan).

Caritas CR announces donation for Afghanistan and Pakistan Earthquake Victims

The disaster in Afghanistan and Pakistan has already reached 160 deaths and many injured. The number is growing, while the material damage is still not calculated. Despite the fact that the epicenter of the earthquake was close to the city of Feyzabad, the capital of province Badakhshan in Afghanistan, more victims are reported in the neighbouring country, Pakistan.

In connection with the death of five paratroopers, Caritas CR launched a fundraising campaign to help the relatives of these brave individuals. Comrades in arms gave rise to this act. The collection is intended as an expression of appreciation for their work and for the principles of freedom and democracy this foreign mission defended.

Ensuring food security in Afghanistan

Caritas CR has been operating in Afghanistan since August 2012. In cooperation with the local non-governmental organization Afghan Women Resource Center and the Slovak humanitarian organization People in Peril, it aims to increase food security within central Afghan provinces Parwan and Kapisa.
