Caritas CR (CCR) has been operating in Indonesian Aceh since the beginning of 2005. Initially, it focused on the distribution of humanitarian assistance and reconstruction of damaged homes. Following activities were concentrated mainly on the restoration of livelihoods for farmers and fishermen, and on building the capacity of local organizations.

Caritas CR also assisted during various disasters in other areas of Indonesia.

Indonesian Aceh – 10 years after tsunami

Samwil was born on 24 December 2004. In the village Lamlumpu, where his family lives, it’s common that most children are born traditionally at home. If his delivery had been without complications, he would have been born like that. But Samwil was born in hospital in Banda Aceh, the capital of the Indonesian province Aceh. And this is what saved their lives.

In September 2014 Caritas Czech Republic plans to terminate all their activities in Indonesia. They have operated there since 2005 after the devastating tsunami in 2004. The last project includes training for local patchouli growers and producers of oil from this plant in province Aceh.

Botanicus supports farmers in Indonesia

A new project was introduced today outlining the cooperation between the Czech company Botanicus and Caritas Czech Republic. Its purpose is to directly support growers of the plant, “patchouli” in Aceh province in Indonesia.  The special set of cosmetics named, “Botanicus Patchouli” was also launched onto the market.

Patchouli Growers in Aceh, Indonesia

Patchouli is an essential oil used in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and insect repellents. It is in high demand around the world and cannot be reproduced in the laboratory. The patchouli shrub requires nutrient rich soil, high levels of rainfall and adequate sunlight to thrive. These conditions combine to form a paradise for the plant on the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra: the Aceh Province.
