Caritas Czech Republic transforms Moldovan schools into a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment

In the Moldovan countryside, people often face problems stemming from outdated infrastructure and limited access to clean water. An uneasy situation is reflected in the local educational system as well, because it is difficult to set hygiene and sanitary standards under such conditions. Therefore, Caritas Czech Republic improves them and also organises awareness-raising programmes for parents and teachers, so they can subsequently educate their children and students. These activities in Moldova are supported by the European Union and the Czech Development Agency.

Modern and hygienic restroom facilities contribute to well-being in schools

Last year, Caritas renovated and reconstructed restroom facilities in two schools in the north of the country, particularly Dimitrie Cantemir Gymnasium in Glodeni and Gymnasium in the village of Cobusca Nouă in the region of Anenii Noi. The new toilets are modern and hygienic, which helps create a comfortable educational environment. A healthy and safe environment is essential for children’s development and also enhances the overall mental well-being of the entire community.

“Thanks to the generous involvement and demonstrated social responsibility, over 100 students and teachers today benefit from a safer, more hygienic, and friendly environment, which directly enhances the quality of the educational process. We extend our sincere thanks to the Caritas Czech Republic Moldova team as well as the construction crew for their professionalism and dedication. This partnership showcases the remarkable results possible through the collaboration of international organisations, local authorities, and the private sector,” the administration of the Gymnasium Cantemir Gymnasium states.

The reconstruction of the restroom facilities also focused on constructing toilets that are easily accessible to individuals with reduced mobility or disabilities. According to the principal of the Cobusca Nouă Gymnasium, Caritas helped support school inclusion.

“This investment represents a significant change for one of our students, who will finally have safe and decent conditions,” the principal explains.

In 2026, Caritas Czech Republic plans to carry out similar reconstructions in ten other schools across the country. New restroom facilities will bolster school spirit in other Moldovan regions, including Lipcani, Strășeni, Hâncești, and Șoldănești.

Caritas Czech Republic improves hygienic standards in the country

At the Cobusca Nouă Gymnasium, Caritas Czech Republic organised an educational event for 50 parents and teachers, during which topics such as personal hygiene at home and school, water cleanliness, and intimate hygiene for teenage girls were discussed. The adults attended the event with the aim of passing on the knowledge they had acquired to their children and students in the future. The programme was also open to 50 girls over the age of 13, who additionally received hygiene kits.

Last year, Caritas Czech Republic also installed a unique rainwater harvesting system in a kindergarten in the small Moldovan village of Bilicenii Vechi. The system now serves 135 children and the entire local staff. It can capture, filter, and store rainwater.

Thank you for helping us improve hygiene and sanitation together, not only in Moldova but also, for example, in Ethiopia, where last year we provided water access to 9,000 residents in the village of Banka Kebele.
