We have been operating in Mongolia since 2006. Our primary focus is environmental work, especially waste management, and actively supporting young people. However, we have also provided humanitarian aid to pastoralists affected by the harsh winter or helped in the fields of education, social services or health.

During 2025, our projects in Mongolia will be completed and the local branch will be closed.

Restoration of Livelihoods of Families Affected by Dzud

The project is in reaction to a specific natural disaster called dzud, which in the first half of 2010 left many pastoral families without livelihoods. The purpose of the project was not only to provide immediate humanitarian relief, which would solve the pressing food shortage; but also to focus on long-term needs of inhabitants and its aim was therefore to restore the livelihoods of affected families in the Bayan – Ondor sum (district) of the most seriously affected Ovorhangai Province.

Distribution of livestock to herder families in Mongolia

In Mongolia, a so called dzud poses a very frequent and probably the most striking type of natural hazard. It is caused by multiple factors of draught summer followed by severe winter with extremely low temperatures and usually a lot of snow which prevents animals from reaching the grass.
