Caritas Czech Republic, in cooperation with Caritas Japan and the international organisation Caritas Internationalis, aided Japan after a powerful earthquake and the subsequent devastating tsunami struck the country on Friday, 11 March 2011. 

In total, 5 million CZK from the fundraising campaign launched by Caritas Czech Republic covered the costs of assistance provided to approximately 18,750 people between March and September 2011.

The Bishop Isao Kikuchi, SVD, the president of Caritas Japan, sent a message to all national Caritas organisations, including the Czech one, in which he is writing about the third anniversary of the enormous earthquake and the tsunami wave in eastern Japan. He expressed regret over the dismal situation of almost three thousand inhabitants who still cannot return to their homes. Here is his letter.

Assistance for Japan has not stopped

Caritas Japan continues to help people who live in four Japanese areas affected by the devastating tsunami in March 2011. By the end of September, it has used also about 60 million CZK, sent from various caritas organizations, including 5 million CZK provided by Caritas Czech Republic.
