Ethiopia

In July 2011, famine struck the Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia. According to the UN, it has been the worst drought in the last 60 years, and could result in up to ten million starving people becoming dependent on humanitarian aid. Caritas CR has announced a collection to help people in Ethiopia and Somalia, from which vouchers for food or basic needs were funded. During the time period between 2011 and 2017 we completed following projects in Ethiopia:

Ethiopian families have received the necessary livestock

Annual lower intake of rainfall in Ethiopia, mainly in Kedida Gamela, has negatively affected the harvest and the yields from agricultural production, which is important for the livelihood of  many local residents. Lower rainfall in Ethiopia has become a regular occurence since 2011.

Caritas CR Hosts Experts on the ground in Ethiopia

In August 2014, Dominika Kobzová and Jana Smolíková, experts from the Research Institute for Soil and Water Conservation, left for the Ethiopian Woreda (regions) of Kedida Gamel. At the invitation of Caritas CR, they went there to carry out research to clarify the cause of local landslides and to propose appropriate solutions to protect against this in the future.

At the beginning of 2014 Caritas Czech Republic started a project in Ethiopia with the goal to increase agricultural production, increase profitability of poor farmer’s fields and ensure sustainable access to water and other natural resources.

Since 2011, Caritas CR has been helping beekeepers and local potters in Ethiopa by increasing the possibilities for gaining an income for themselves and their families. Support for their activities is coming to an end however and in the future they will be forced to produce pottery entirely alone.

Since 2011, Caritas Czech Republic has been helping local beekeepers in Ethiopia to be able to secure a living for themselves and their families, among other things.
