Caritas CR announces donation for Afghanistan and Pakistan Earthquake Victims

The disaster in Afghanistan and Pakistan has already reached 160 deaths and many injured. The number is growing, while the material damage is still not calculated. Despite the fact that the epicenter of the earthquake was close to the city of Feyzabad, the capital of province Badakhshan in Afghanistan, more victims are reported in the neighbouring country, Pakistan.

Last April an earthquake in Nepal damaged or completely destroyed schools. 3,131 from overall 5,166 classrooms need to be restored only in the most affected region, Sindhupalčok. Due to the support of Czech donors, Caritas Czech Republic started to work on reconstruction of 31 schools together with Caritas Switzerland.

Typhoon Koppu, Philippines

Typhoon Koppu, known localy as Lando, hit the Philippines on October 14, 2015. It’s effects were mainly felt on the largest island of the Philippines, Luzon, in the north of country. The typhoon caused heavy rains , devastating floods and landslides after hitting seven regions in the central and northern part of Luzon. The tropical storm was accompanied by torrential rainfall that has yet to stop. Today, October 20, the storm struck the archipelago of Calayan and Bubayan.

In the village of Balangiga, in the South of Eastern Samar, live 12,756 inhabitants. At least 90% of these people’s livelihood comes from growing bananas, rice, various root crops, vegetables and coconuts. Their lives, sadly, changed radically when the village was hit by typhoon in November 2013. After two years, the people of Balangiga have gradually begun to stand on their own two feet again.

They’re part of a wave of at least 430,000 refugees and migrants to have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe in makeshift boats operated by people smugglers. Caritas Jerusalem is increasingly concerned about the escalating violence in the West Bank between Israeli settlers and Palestinians. Incidents have been reported in over 50 locations in recent weeks, from stone throwing, arson, use of fire arms and clashes in contact points in Nablus, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jaffa and Nazareth. Basic health care services improving in Bayan-Ölgii

Last August, Caritas CR in cooperation with People in Need organized a medical workshop in Bayan-Ölgii. Local medical staff was informed about the forthcoming manual about mobile health centers in yurts. The participants were divided into five groups and they expressed themselves on every point of the proposed manual. This meeting was another important part of the process of improving health care accessibility in rural areas of Mongolia.

Three young women, Aneta Kantorová, Barbora Mašínová and Pavlína Trojanová left the Czech Republic in mid-September for Zambia. During their internship through Caritas Czech Republic, Aneta will work in the area of Mongu, where she will stay until January 2016, supporting care for mothers and their new-born children. Barbora will help in the area of Meheba until Christmas and Pavlína will help in the area of Mawukwayukwa.
