On Thursday, October 10, the Ambrela Development Forum took place in Bratislava, Slovakia. It brought together speakers from different countries to talk about the major crises and conflicts the world is currently facing. Among them was our colleague Kateřina Velíšková as a moderator, who led a panel discussion on the issue of providing humanitarian aid during the war in Gaza.

The world is currently experiencing a record number of conflicts and crises since the end of World War II. From the war in Gaza, which is hitting civilians particularly hard, to the fighting in Sudan, which has caused a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, to the problems caused by drought and water scarcity in many countries. In 2024, up to 300 million people will need humanitarian aid. What conflicts and crises should we be watching in 2024?

She had to start from scratch. Today, Iqbal from Iraq is a successful seamstress

This year marks 10 years since the invasion of Iraq by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, which forced millions of Iraqis to flee their homes. The same fate met Iqbal, who fled from Karakosh to Erbil to escape ISIS. To support her big family, she began creating handmade products. Today, Iqbal makes a successful living as a seamstress who also takes orders from abroad. She also manages to do this thanks to Caritas Czech Republic.

7th October marks exactly one year since the Hamas attack on Israel, which escalated into the current war in the Gaza Strip and has had a profound impact on events across the region. After twelve months of relentless bombing, the Gaza Strip is completely devastated. More than 42 000 Palestinians have lost their lives and more than 99 000 others have been injured. People are also dying in the West Bank and, following the recent escalation, in Lebanon. Caritas has been helping since the beginning of the conflict.

Every day, thousands of civilians are moving from the frontline of Ukraine in evacuation trains. According to official reports, about 4 million have partially or completely lost their homes as a result of the ongoing attacks. Olga and her four children have settled in the new cosy house built by Caritas Czech Republic in the village of Neresnytsia in Transcarpathia. Here, in a modular town, they are joined by 30 other displaced people from the eastern and southern regions.

Edith, an entrepreneur from Mandali Village in Zambia’s Southern province, has empowered over 100 people by establishing 14 savings groups thanks to the financial management and business skills training from Caritas Czech Republic. Initially struggling with limited funds and market access for her small business, Edith used her newly acquired skills to enhance her business and become a master trainer, she now leads and supports her community by sharing her knowledge and experience.

There are a lot of strong people in Gaza who continue to help despite being affected by the war themselves, says Safa Younes from Caritas Czech Republic

Safa Younes is a Palestinian humanitarian worker based in Jaffa, Tel Aviv. After the war in Gaza broke out, Safa made the pivotal decision to shift her career and dedicate herself to helping those impacted by the conflict. She now works for Caritas Czech Republic, coordinating aid efforts for Gaza in collaboration with Caritas Jerusalem. Her unique perspective offers insights into the challenges of providing humanitarian assistance across borders during times of conflict.
