Najlaa lives in Karakosh, a town in northern Iraq. She is 50 years old, works as a seamstress, and her story is one of grief, faith, and quiet determination. In 2023, she lost her son in a car accident. Since then, she has been dreaming of opening her own sewing workshop – and naming it in his memory.

Martin is a successful young entrepreneur; with the help of Caritas Czech Republic, he opened his own clothing store in Karakosh, Iraq. He moved to the city after its liberation from ISIS. Through his work, he earns a living not only for himself but also for his father and two brothers with disabilities.

How wars destroy the environment and contribute to climate change

Did you know that militaries are responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions? Wars and conflicts not only have a devastating impact on people's lives, but also negatively affect the environment and contribute significantly to climate change. By the Ukraine war’s third year, total war-related emissions generated are roughly equal to the annual emissions of several mid-sized European countries combined. In Gaza, the destruction of ecosystems is being referred to as ecocide and a war crime. In the future, the reconstruction of post-war areas will also present a problem.

When rain is not enough: Manifesto, a farmer from Zambia, seeks ways to adapt to the climate crisis

Due to climate change, Manifesto had to rethink his farming methods. He started growing more resilient crops, built his own irrigation system, and learned how to make natural fertiliser. Today, he is able to feed his family and sell the surplus from his harvest at local markets – thanks in part to support from Caritas Czech Republic.
