I wanted my internship to be meaningful and help people in need, says Sarah Butgereit

Sarah Butgereit is an undergraduate student in International Communication. She recently completed a four-and-a-half-month internship with the communications team in the humanitarian aid and development cooperation department at Caritas Czech Republic. Sarah helped the team by writing articles, organising a PR event for a festival or assisting with administrative tasks. Learn more about her experience with Caritas Czech Republic in the following interview.

Why did you decide to do an internship with a humanitarian organisation like Caritas Czech Republic?

Choosing an internship with Caritas Czech Republic felt like a natural step for me. As a bachelor’s student in International Communication, I needed to complete an internship as part of my studies. I was eager to apply my communication skills to meaningful work, specifically within an NGO. After applying to several organisations with little response, I began to doubt my decision. Then, a friend who had applied for a different position with Caritas Czech Republic shared a vacancy with me. I applied, got accepted, and it felt like a perfect fit. I was driven by the desire to use my knowledge to support those in need, making a real impact through my work.

It seems you were determined to put your skills to good use while gaining valuable experience. Could you tell us more about your internship at Caritas Czech Republic? How long did it last, and what were your main responsibilities?

My internship lasted 4,5 months. During this time, I felt like an integral part of the communication team. My primary responsibility was writing articles for the website. I also helped organise a PR event, focusing on the critical issue of climate change. Therefore, this involved creating new communication materials such as flyers, magazines, and activity sheets for kids. One memorable activity was a workshop where children made wallets from old milk cartons, which was both fun and educational.
Besides these tasks, I contributed to another PR event at a festival, generated social media content, assisted with a monthly newsletter, and handled various administrative duties.

Was this your first experience with a humanitarian organisation? Was there anything that surprised you during your internship?

Yes, it was my first experience with an NGO. To complete this internship I had to move to Prague. Honestly, adjusting to a new city and routine was challenging for me, especially coming straight from a study abroad semester in Budapest. However, the welcoming and understanding team at Caritas Czech Republic made my transition smooth.
Moreover, the planning of the PR events was the highlight but also the most challenging part of my internship. Yet, knowing I had support whenever needed made all the difference. The experience was both enriching and rewarding, providing me with new perspectives and skills.

Do you think a specific diploma or set of skills is necessary to intern at Caritas Czech Republic, and did you gain any new practical or theoretical skills during your time with us?

I do not think a specific diploma is necessary to intern at Caritas Czech Republic. While my background in communication was beneficial, I think anyone can learn the required skills over time. The team is very open to discussing preferred tasks, making it a flexible learning environment. During my internship, I improved my time management and organisational skills, particularly while preparing for the PR events. For example, at first it was challenging to delegate tasks, but I gradually learned to lead effectively.

What was the most enjoyable part of your experience at Caritas Czech Republic?

I found joy in writing articles, as it is something I am passionate about. Additionally, participating in the PR events was refreshing because it differed from office tasks. Engaging with people on-site and organising activities for children was incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the culmination of our hard work at these events was satisfying. Moreover, I cherished the friendships I formed with other interns, which made my time at Caritas Czech Republic even more memorable.

What are your plans for the future?

This summer, I plan to spend time with my family in Germany. After that, I will return to the Netherlands to complete my final year of my bachelor’s programme. I do not have specific plans beyond that yet, but I will be considering my options during my last year at university.
