How is Caritas Czech Republic helping after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria? Interview with our Relief Coordinator Anna Volfová

The death toll of last week's catastrophic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria exceeded 25,000 people. And the number continues to grow. At the same time, over 5 million people have lost their homes in Syria alone, with hundreds of thousands more in Turkey. Caritas Czech Republic is helping to provide them with immediate humanitarian aid. We spoke to our colleague Anna Volfova, who is coordinating our aid to people affected by the earthquake, about the situation on the ground and how we are helping.

Nine months ago, our activities in Moldova were primarily focused on development. However, with the start of the war in Ukraine, Moldova has become a second home for more than 95,000 refugees, and aid organisations had to adapt quickly to the situation. We spoke with Cristina Rogojina, project manager at Caritas Czech Republic, about the organisation’s shift towards humanitarian aid and her own motivation to help Ukrainians fleeing the war.

The deinstitutionalization of adults with disabilities in Georgia soon will come to an end

In Georgia, process of transferring adults with disabilities from large boarding houses to family-type homes began in 2011 and is still ongoing. In 2020, Caritas Czech Republic, with the financial support of the Czech Development Agency and in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Georgia, developed a deinstitutionalization strategy and an action plan. In addition, our organization took responsibility for providing community-based homes and services for persons with disabilities (PwDs) living in two large boarding homes under state care.

Natalia is a nurse in one of the home care centres that Caritas Czech Republic opened in Moldova. She regularly visits elderly and disadvantaged people, providing them with health check-ups, but also talking to them so they do not feel alone. Ulyana Popova іs a psychologist, who has been working for Caritas Ukraine for more than 4 years. Since the beginning of the war, her work has changed completely. She helps people forced by the war out of their homes to safer parts of Ukraine overcome war horrors and integrate into their new reality. She helps people to learn how to live a normal life in the shadow of the war. Caritas Czech Republic provides psychological training for specialists like Ulyana.

Migration has affected almost every family in Moldova. Young people in particular are leaving the country and leave behind elderly people who cannot and usually do not want to leave Moldova. The years go by, and these people become lonely and in need of help. Varvara Cecoi used to be a lonely senior too, until she received help from Caritas Czech Republic.

Young Syrians are motivated to face the difficult situation, says lecturer Václav Šneberger

The civil war in Syria has been going on for more than 11 years. As a result, young Syrians have spent a large part of their lives at war. Yet they have not lost hope for a better future. Local non-governmental organizations help them to become active members of society. Caritas Czech Republic supports the work of 30 local organizations that focus on youth thanks to the support of the European Commission. Our collaborator Václav Šneberger, who has been working as a lecturer and methodologist in the field of education and development, recently travelled to the Turkish-Syrian border.
