From Displaced Woman to Humanitarian Worker

Being a woman working in the humanitarian sector is not easy, especially in Iraq, where less than 15 percent of women participate in the labor market. This is among the lowest women labor participation rates worldwide. We have been talking to Jwan Najeeb Behnam, who works as a Caritas Czech Republic Livelihood Officer in Ninewa, Iraq. She shares her experience as a working woman, especially in non-governmental organizations.

The Labyrinth 2030 contest for young people which focused on innovations in development aid has its winner. Or rather winners. It focuses on supporting emancipation of women and breaking taboo surrounding menstruation in Zambia through workshops about how to make menstrual pads.

April is the month for autism awareness and acceptance. In Georgia, life is not easy for people with autism spectrum disorder especially due to low awareness of this disorder. It has only been a few days since the Pope Francis' four-day trip to Iraq. It was the first ever papal visit to the country, which has suffered years of armed conflict. Masupanzila: Zambia's women farmers empowering other women

They call themselves Masupanzila, the Pathfinders. They are a group of 24 women fearlessly crossing the waters of Barotse Floodplain to take care of their rice fields in Mongu District, Western Province of Zambia. Masupanzila Women Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society was established more than a decade ago with the purpose of empowering female peasant farmers, tailors, and women involved in traditional crafts. One of their founding members has a message for struggling women from all over the world. "Don’t give up!" says the cooperative chairperson Sanana Munalula Mbikusita Lewanika.

CCR renews its access to EU humanitarian budget and will be a DG ECHO certified partner until 2027

Humanitarian needs are growing globally. Not only because of the impacts of climate change, but also because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has seriously hit developing countries. They are in desperate need of help, and the European Commission reacted by increasing its initial annual humanitarian budget for 2021 by 60% to €1.4 billion. Caritas Czech Republic has been working with The Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission (ECHO) since 2004, and was one of the first organisations to receive a prestigious certificate and thus have this partnership prolonged for another 7 years.
