How Miyombo bought his first cows thanks to Caritas Czech Republic's ‘Saving for Change’ programme

It is estimated that 82.5% of smallholder farmers in Zambia own at least one type of livestock. But despite this large percentage, it is still not easy for local people living in the rural parts of the country to own livestock because they cannot afford it. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia and the World Food Programme for introducing the savings group initiative, Miyombo Miyombo is now a proud owner of two cows.

Brian from Zambia now sells onion on the market again. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic

Brian Lupiya lives in the capital of Zambia. He has always sold onions at the local market in Lusaka to earn a living. But when the first cases of coronavirus appeared in Zambia and strict measures were put in place, Brian lost his job overnight. We helped the young Zambian to rebuild his small business.

Rana AbdulRazzaq is a mechanical engineer who graduated from the University of Anbar Mechanical Engineering Department in 2012 in Anbar Governorate. Unfortunately, she had no luck getting employed. She was disappointed trying to find a job in the engineering sector. Nevertheless, Rana always loved her department. She liked solving mathematical problems and also always wanted to teach others. Thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic and the UNDP, Rana was able to open a small education centre where she gives private lessons and earns a living.

The COVID-19 shock has been severe and widespread across businesses, with a persistent negative impact on sales. Small businesses particularly local traders across Zambia gravely felt the brunt of the financial dislocations with most small businesses completely shutting down, condemning hundreds of families into abject poverty. These businesses have bounced back after receiving grants from Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia, through the cash-based multi-sectoral Intervention initiative project.

Azad and his siblings are now diligently working in their greenhouse

Azad Kreik was born in Bashiqa and resides in a house with his wife, children, brothers, and mother with his family of roughly 17 people. They reside in an orchard they created after their property was burned down by ISIS. They cultivate olive trees in the orchard, and Bashiqa is known for its olive groves and pickles production.  In the open space between the trees, they also grow many veggies. His brother Ziyad, his children, and a few friends assist him in his farming endeavors. As a result, they also share their agricultural and crop-harvesting experiences.

Juwan, a 32-year-old woman from Anbar Governorate's Heet District, lives with her husband, son, and daughter. She is a stay-at-home mother who occasionally produces handicrafts to assist her husband. Juwan learned about the Anbar Cash for Work project from her relatives. She decided to apply for this initiative as she needed money to support her family.

Qutada Halim Mutashar is a young man who lives in the Al-Furat, Heet District in the Iraqi governorate of Anbar. His life has not been easy, during the war his family was displaced and Qutada was facing psychological issues after returning to their home region. Ameel Ghanim is a 21-year-old man who lives in a small house in Bashiqa District, Ninewa Governorate in Iraq. In the three years that ISIS-occupied this area Ameel and his family relocated to Sarsink Subdistrict in the Duhok Governorate. There were no employment opportunities in Sarsink, and Ameel could not find a job even after returning to Bashiqa. Now, he has hope, thanks to the training from the Caritas Czech Republic, Ameel Learned digital marketing skills.

How Kefaya from Iraq changed the course of her life thanks to our training

Kefaya Elias is a 28-year-old mother of three who lives in the Bashiqa District of Ninewa Governorate, Iraq. She graduated from college, but was unable to find a job after graduation. Together with her family, Kefaya was forced to flee the Ninewa Plains after the ISIS attacks and travel to Duhok Governorate. Without any job or money to rent a home, they remained in refugee camp.
