Mongolia

We have been operating in Mongolia since 2006. Our primary focus is environmental work, especially waste management, and actively supporting young people. However, we have also provided humanitarian aid to pastoralists affected by the harsh winter or helped in the fields of education, social services or health.

During 2025, our projects in Mongolia will be completed and the local branch will be closed.

Sustainable development

Waste treatment, especially plastics, is one of the significant problems facing Mongolia today. In 2020, we successfully completed a project that focused on recycling and recovering construction waste. We are currently working to promote plastic waste treatment, which floods Mongolia. Its illegal disposal is widespread not only among households but also companies.

Supporting youth and civil society

Together with our partner organisations, we are committed to developing Mongolian youth and civil society. In the framework of the project "All for YOUth, YOUth for all", we not only support the development of volunteering among young people but also help them with personal development and advise them on how to plan and build a career.

Caritas is helping Mongolia with sustainable plastic recycling and supports the development of a green economy. Its new project aims to strengthen the transition towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient circular economy in Mongolia with the financial support of the European Union.

Mongolia is Surfing the “Renovation Wave” through Construction Materials Recovery

Mongolia is the 19th largest country in the world by area, however, its population of just 3.29 million, also makes it the world’s most sparsely populated country. Since the 1990 democratic revolution, 40% of Mongolia’s population migrated to the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, resulting in an increasing demand for new housing and the booming of the construction industry, rapidly expanding until this day. Existing buildings are, however, not resource efficient, with many relying on fossil fuels for heating and cooling and old technologies and wasteful appliances in their operations.
