Middle East

We help people in the Middle East cope with the consequences of conflict and humanitarian disasters. We have been operating in the region since 2012.

We provide humanitarian assistance primarily in Syria and Palestine (Gaza), where people are facing the consequences of protracted conflict, poverty and natural disasters. We provide access to basic necessities, health and psychosocial care, and support the restoration of livelihoods and shelter.

In the years 2012-2025, our branch in Iraq was active, focusing primarily on the reconstruction of the country after the war, providing shelter, building livelihoods and supporting farmers in adapting to climate change. We have also been active in providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Turkey affected by the catastrophic earthquake and to the people of Lebanon after the devastating explosion in Beirut.

7 things you need to know about the genocide in Gaza

Genocide is one of the most serious crimes under international law. It refers to deliberate acts intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Genocide does not only mean mass killings; it also includes causing serious bodily or mental harm, creating living conditions intended to destroy the group, and preventing access to humanitarian aid, food, water, or medical care. What is currently happening in Gaza meets these criteria. The notion that a nation that has itself been a victim of genocide cannot commit such acts against others is false.

I’m farming the land my grandfather and great-grandfather once worked on, says Peter, a farmer from Iraq

Peter is a farmer from the town of Karamles in northern Iraq. His farm is well known across the region – he’s called the Onion King, as his harvest is sought after not only by locals, but by people from far and wide. Farming runs deep in his family’s history. “For more than 150 years, my family has been connected to farming. My grandfather, great-grandfather, father – and now me,” Peter says. Caritas Czech Republic helped him adapt his farming to the challenges of climate change.
