The people in Gaza are living in devastating conditions. Our colleague Amal was forced to leave his home in Gaza when the war began. He and his family then lived with his friends in Khan Younis when their building was bombed in December. Amal's brother lost his leg under the crushed building and is still waiting for proper treatment. Another colleague from Caritas Jerusalem is still searching for shelter after having moved five times.

I want to become an entrepreneur and give back to my community, says Baruani, a refugee student at the Cavendish University in Zambia

Baruani is a 24-year-old student originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He fled his home country with his family to neighbouring Zambia to escape violence and conflict. They found safety in the refugee settlement of Mantapala, but Baruani wanted something more - an education that would also allow him to help other refugees. Thanks to our support, he is now studying at a university in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.

Mujahed from Iraq reopened his workshop thanks to Caritas Czech Republic

Mujahed is a carpenter who worked in his workshop for fifteen years before he had to flee to Baghdad with his family because of the so-called Islamic state. After returning, he found his workshop destroyed, but thanks to Caritas Czech Republic, he was able to reopen it. Now he can provide for his family and even support other people in need by creating work opportunities.

The situation for the people of the Gaza Strip is dire. 2.2 million people are on the brink of famine. Over 85% of the population has been forced to flee their homes and are surviving in inhumane conditions. Even the most basic necessities are lacking. A planned Israeli ground operation in Rafah would have unimaginable consequences. Caritas Czech Republic joins the call on the Government of the Czech Republic to use all its capabilities to push for an immediate solution to the humanitarian crisis and a ceasefire.
