Caritas helps Ukrainian refugees in Russia

Since September 2014 Caritas South of Russia has been helping Ukrainian refugees who come to the city of Rostov. Food and hygienic kits, bed linens, and baby food are distributed among them. Many refugees appreciated the contents of the food kit, which provides them with long-term food.

Four years of war in Syria have left Middle East in ruins

Caritas aims to increase its work in Syria, Iraq and across the Middle East in 2015 as the conflict in Syria enters into its fifth year with no solution in sight. The Caritas confederation of Catholic aid agencies operating in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey reached 1.2 million people in 2014 with aid through national Caritas and Church partners. At the end of February 2015, representatives from the Georgian authorities, the Czech Development Agency, local farmers and the staff of Caritas Czech Republic, visited renovated warehouses containing potatoes in Kvemo Alvan. During the season, local growers were able to save the first eight tons of unique Tusheti potatoes there.

Study on the “rights to food” contributes to a broader discussion

The study “Foreign direct investment to agricultural-food network in India and Sub-Saharan Africa”, was published in January 2015 by the German organisation Bischöfliches Hilfswerk MISEREOR, Mendel University in Brno and Caritas Czech Republic. The study and a research colloquium held in February are just some of the activities carried out through the EcoFairTrade project, a project focused on the rights to food.

Czech health experts in Zambia for the second time

In November 2014 Caritas CR sent Czech experts in the health care of mother and child to Mongu in Zambia's Western Province for the second time. The three-member team of medics arrived in the capital Lusaka just in time for flags, bonfires, firecrackers and general merriment. All public spaces were dressed in green, red, black and orange - the four colours of Zambian flag. Yes, it was  the 50th anniversary celebration of Zambia’s independence.
