Following typhoon abnormal drought strikes the Philippines

Nearly two years after the Haiyan typhoon struck the Philippines in November 2013, local farmers have increasingly been faced with the consequences of extreme drought. According to scientists from the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and from the British Meteorological Office (MET), an unusually long period without rain has caused the phenomenon of El Niño.

In August 2015, Moldovan experts, mainly from an organization called SocioPolis, finished six months work on materials for instructors and social workers active in the area of child protection. This included materials for tutors in family-type children’s homes, specialists from social centres and employees of relevant local institutions. A Czech expert, Petra Winnette, Ph.D, helped with the preparation of the materials.

Helping families in Iraq takes many forms

Due to repeated clashes with the radical terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), Iraq now suffers from major internal displacement. Since the beginning of the conflict in 2014, 1.8 million people have left their homes. The Iraqi Kurdistan region now accommodates 90,564 families, 47% of which are displaced residents who have settled in only three of the region’s districts (Dohuk, Al-Shekhan and Akre). In the area of northern Iraq, 222,000 refugees from war-stricken Syria also continue to seek refuge.

Caritas CR managed to extend their existing activities in Jordan until the end of 2015. However the original plans have been unset by the Jordanian government action on the issue of the rights of Syrian refugees. They can no longer attend apprenticeships or internships. They also cannot establish their own business or be employed, a law that fundamentally changed the form of charity collaboration in Jordan.

Necessary aid in need continues to grow in Damascus

An anonymous Syrian organization, and Caritas partner, provides humanitarian aid to the families in need in Damascus. Unfortunately, the name of the organization cannot be mention in public for security reasons. In July, the organization registered an additional 150 families to receive aid, yet the number of people in needs continues to amplifying alongside the conflict. The households outside the capital and provinces such as As-Suwayda, Hasaka, Aleppo, Homs and Dar'a ask to be registered as well.

In Syria, as a result of the protracted conflict, there are more than 12 million people in critical need and five million of them are children. Four out of five people live below the poverty line in the country. The unemployment has risen to 60 %. There is a lack of food, water and hygiene equipment. For that reason Caritas in participation with other partners continues providing the food, clothes, and household equipment in Damascus.
