Caritas launches appeal to help flood-stricken Slovenia

Devastating floods hit Slovenia in early August. It affected more than two-thirds of the country and killed four people. The water destroyed or damaged many houses and public infrastructure. The estimated damage now stands at EUR 500 million. Caritas Czech Republic is releasing money from its emergency fund and has launched an appeal. The proceeds will go to Caritas Slovenia, which has been helping on the ground since the beginning of the crisis.

Immediate assistance

Caritas Slovenia was immediately involved in helping the affected people. They are focusing on providing the basic necessities of life, such as food, drinking water, hygiene products and medicines. At the same time, it is setting up logistics routes, providing supplies, pumping water, removing mud and subsequently helping to rebuild buildings. Caritas staff also provide comfort and personal support to people. "It's tough to talk about. I burst into tears. Late yesterday afternoon, one of the families from our parish was evacuated by helicopter. This morning their house was floating down the river. Shortly afterwards, young volunteers from Caritas arrived to help clean up the area," said volunteer Terezie Vivod from the Prevalje Parish Caritas. "Our volunteers and staff provide people with clothes, food and water. We are also preparing a hot meal for them. The gratitude of the people is immeasurable," she added.

Help needed

In addition to staff and volunteers from parish and diocesan Caritas, several hundred volunteers from Young Caritas pitched in to help. In places where they could, they immediately started helping with tasks such as cleaning houses or removing mud and sludge. Caritas from neighbouring countries are also involved in the relief effort, supporting Caritas Slovenia financially or providing material assistance such as pumps and dehumidifiers. The Slovenian government has also made support available for household reconstruction. However, the scale of the disaster is huge and the amount needed to help all affected and vulnerable people is much larger.

Caritas Czech Republic is releasing immediate funds from its emergency fund and has announced an appeal, which will be donated to Caritas Slovenia. The latter will use the funds for direct humanitarian aid and damage repair and for the subsequent reconstruction of the affected areas. We thank all those who choose to help the affected people.
