Nana from Georgia could increase the honey production thanks to our support

Nana Dvalidze from the Georgian province of Racha is one of the entrepreneurs supported by Caritas Czech Republic as part of our initiative to help the country recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Nana focuses primarily on beekeeping and she could increase honey production thanks to our support.

The most common source of livelihood is agriculture

Nana Dvalidze lives in a mountain village Bajikhevi in the region Racha-Lechkhumi. For local residents, the main source of livelihood is agriculture, mainly animal breeding. Nana says about her business: Our main activities are beekeeping and cattle breeding. We currently have 10 herds of cattle and 60 beehives. With her honey, as well as dairy products, Nana supplies local hotels and tourists, who find the local region an attractive holiday destination.

In Georgia, beekeeping is a traditional craft, but it is also challenging work: “Honey pressing has always been a very difficult and time-consuming process, requiring hard work. The whole process often takes a week, sometimes more," says Nana, describing the daily reality.

Thanks to a grant from Caritas Czech Republic, this part of honey production is now easier for Nana: “Thanks to the help of Caritas Czech Republic, I was able to buy a honey extractor and a honey press, which made our work much easier and the whole process is much faster now.” Thanks to the modern extractor, the honeycomb also remains intact so that it can be reused.

Creating new jobs

The activities of Caritas Czech Republic in Georgia have been focused on supporting businesses in rural areas for a long time, we focus mainly on the mountain region Racha-Lechkhumi. Entrepreneurs can receive grants and also material assistance in the form of modern working tools and machinery, as was the case of Nana Dvalidze. This enables them to expand their business and provide new jobs for other residents of the region.
