Since 2011, Syria has faced a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions from their homes. The people of Syria face a lack of basic needs and livelihoods. We are helping to mitigate the effects of the civil war in the country. We have been working in the Turkish-Syrian border region since 2013. We have provided humanitarian material aid and healthcare and helped provide people with decent housing in the Idlib region.

In February 2023, a devastating earthquake struck Syria and Turkey. This exacerbated the problematic situation of the people in the country and left them entirely dependent on humanitarian organisations to provide for their basic needs.

Humanitarian aid for earthquake victims

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, we started to provide on-the-ground assistance in cooperation with our partner organisations. We provided basic material aid such as food, drinking water, hygiene kits, warm clothes, and blankets. We are also providing shelter, as well as building social facilities. In response to the earthquake, we have launched a fundraiser to help Turkey and Syria.

Everyday people in Syria become victims of a brutal war. The catastrophe worsens with battles raging in Aleppo, in Hassakeh and elsewhere. Caritas calls on churches, schools, its supporters, governments and people of good faith to join a communal prayer for Syria. Read more on caritas.org.

„We lived in our new house only six months,“ tells Rima from Syria

When Rima (57yrs old) sought out our partnership organisation Caritas Czech Republic in Damascus, she was confused and scared. She asked for help. „ We ran away from our house empty-handed. Now we live in a dwelling where it is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. I got to know about you and I would like to ask for a ventilator,“ she told us. She received the ventilator and afterwards humanitarian workers visited Mrs Rima.

Syrians are exhausted, warns Caritas Syria

On the occasion of the International Peace Day, Caritas Europa joins the confederation's prayers for a quick solution of all the existing conflicts in the world. Our thoughts go to everyone suffering from the misery of war. One of this conflicts is the war in Syria. Pope Francis calls for Middle East peacemakers

Pope Francis met with Church workers on the crisis in Syria and Iraq 29 September in the Vatican. There were representatives of 40 Catholic aid agencies and Churches engaged there in humanitarian operations, including Caritas organisations. “Arms and oppression, hidden interests and violence continues to wreak devastation on these countries,” said the pope. “We have the impression of being caught in a spiral of arrogance and inertia from which there is no escape.” Read more on caritas.org.
