Caritas Czech Republic has been operating in Moldova since 2004, when it first launched its first development project in the country. Until 2017, we operated in Moldova mainly through local partner organizations. In 2017, we established a Caritas Czech Republic mission which was registered in the same year under the name Pro-Development.

In Moldova, we focus on home and social care, health service, development of civil society, agriculture, support of livelihoods, and social inclusion. We have carried out more than 20 projects over the course of our involvement. Currently, we are focusing on the development of accessible, high-quality and sustainable social services. We have already opened 10 home care centers here. We have provided medical and social services for more than 20,000 people. We have also trained more than 5,000 doctors, nurses, and social workers. We involve volunteers and interns in social care, which results in increased local capacities.

In close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection of Moldova, we are participating in preparation of legal changes. These changes will help implement the Czech model of home care services in Moldova, and will present a new tool for establishing social services in the country.

The Caritas Czech Republic mission in Moldova also aims to build mutual trust among inhabitants through coordination of primary health care services on both banks of the Dniester River.

Ukrainian refugees will receive cash assistance through Caritas Czech Republic

Refugees from Ukraine, accommodated in the households or placement centers from Dubasari, Straseni and Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia will receive cash assistance through a project run by Caritas Czech Republic. This initiative will give refugees the dignity of choice in fulfilling their basic needs and will help them to restore a sense of normalcy. Moreover, the refugees will be able to purchase goods and services with cash assistance, which in turn boosts to the economy of the Moldavian communities

Ukrainian refugees sheltered in Moldova start enjoying life again

At the summer camp of Cosnita village in Dubasari district, 130 refugees from Ukraine are currently accommodated. For them, life is divided in two parts -  until February 24, 2022 and after this awful day when Ukraine was attacked by Russia. Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova provided the summer camp with necessary equipment, such as washing machines, refrigerators, but also blankets and pillows, to ensure that the refugees have a comfortable place to stay in a new country.

The impact of refugees on Moldova and the humanitarian aid provided by Caritas Czech Republic

Starting with February 24, 2022, Ukraine's civilian population has been forced to flee their country. Since then, millions of people have been displaced within Ukraine or in neighbouring countries. Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and the Republic of Moldova have become the main host countries for the Ukrainian people. Although Moldova is Ukraine's smallest neighbour and has the fewest economic resources, it has received the most refugees per capita so far. How is the country coping with the current situation and how is Caritas Czech Republic helping refugees in Moldova?
