The Islamic State burnt his farm three times. Sami did not give up and is now farming again

Sami Nouh Daboul is a persistent farmer from Iraq. His family are Assyrian Christians who were targeted by ISIS during its rule over Iraq. They had to flee to safety but found their way back home after the so-called Islamic State left. Sami received crucial assistance from Caritas Czech Republic to rebuild his farm and get back on his feet.

Moldova, a country of three million people, has taken in more than 700,000 refugees since the start of the war in Ukraine, and around 100,000 remain in the country. 41-year-old Maia from Kharkiv also headed here and found refuge with relatives along with her son. The cash support from Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova is helping the family to overcome a financially challenging period.

When a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria in the early hours of February 6 this year, it also affected the life of thirty-four-year-old Alaa. His house was severely damaged and Alaa lost the roof over his head in seconds. Yet he immediately started helping other people affected by the earthquake. In an interview, Alaa explains what it is like to work as a humanitarian in Syria, and what the immediate assistance looked like after the earthquake that took the lives of nearly 60,000 people.

Caritas launches appeal to help flood-stricken Slovenia

Devastating floods hit Slovenia in early August. It affected more than two-thirds of the country and killed four people. The water destroyed or damaged many houses and public infrastructure. The estimated damage now stands at EUR 500 million. Caritas Czech Republic is releasing money from its emergency fund and has launched an appeal. The proceeds will go to Caritas Slovenia, which has been helping on the ground since the beginning of the crisis.
