Cholera outbreak in Zambia: Caritas Czech Republic will support vulnerable communities

Since the beginning of last year, Zambia has experienced multiple cholera outbreaks, affecting 7 out of 10 provinces, including the capital Lusaka. The situation has worsened significantly since October 2023, with the number of infected people on the rise. As of January this year, Zambia has recorded 5,462 confirmed cases. 222 people have died as a result of cholera. Caritas Czech Republic is helping local people to prevent infection and will support vulnerable communities.

Caritas helps in Gaza despite dire conditions

The war in Gaza has been ongoing for more than three months. The fighting has had a devastating impact on the civilian population. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic, with people having no access to even basic needs such as drinking water, food or healthcare, and are at imminent risk of famine. A hundred-member Caritas team is involved in the relief effort on the ground. Caritas is also calling for an immediate ceasefire.

In the refugee placement centre in Calarasi, Moldova, we met Maxim Lesciuk, an 18-year-old from Odesa. A tennis champion and sports enthusiast, Maxim was due to enroll in firefighting school from the autumn of 2022. He was eager to serve and protect people in emergency situations. Maxim’s plans, and the dreams of many others, were shattered when the war came and disrupted everything.

In response to the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel and the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, the global organisation Caritas Internationalis, of which we are also a member, has issued a statement: "Now is the time for peace". It calls for an immediate cessation of fighting in the Holy Land, respect for international humanitarian law, the release of hostages and the immediate provision of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

Loneliness is as challenging as poor health, says Zinovia from Moldova. Thanks to us, her zest for life is returning

Young Moldovans are leaving their home country to work abroad because of the poor economic situation. They are leaving behind elderly people who are then dealing with inadequate health and social care, but also from loneliness. 74-year-old Zinovia is also struggling with loneliness. She is feeling much better thanks to nurse Valentina from a nearby home care centre.
