The Catholic Church together with Nassa/ Caritas Philippines started preparing for the possible devastating impact of typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) that is approaching to Philippine Islands from the east. Nassa/Caritas Philippines donated 1,954 million of Philippines Pesos from the Church fund for special events/occasions and also from Caritas International funds so that it would be possible to buy what is needed for areas threatened with the typhoon.

Since the new year  Caritas Czech Republic has supported the maintance of five mobile clinics in Syria, where doctors and nurses treat or provide help to more than 1 000 patients. Nearly two thousand Syrian refugees now living in Jordan signed up an educational series being held by Charity Jordan in cooperation with Caritas CR. These are just two examples of the current urgent need of help of Caritas CR in the Middle East.

Says Kelly Schut, a Caritas Czech Republic representative who arrived in the Philippines in January 2014. Three years ago she was working on charity projects in Indonesia. In the autumn of 2013 she returned to the Netherlands, her mother country. After typhoon Haiyan afflicted the Philippines, Caritas Czech Republic was looking for project manager to work there. Kelly accepted the post and departed for the Philippines. In following interview she describes her experience and charity work on Samar Island.

Joper Conarco has worked with the Social Action Center in Calbayog since 2006. “I started as a volunteer”, he says. He soon got the opportunity to receive a two-years hands-on training in sustainable agriculture. “I was delighted”, Joper said.  “I wanted to learn more on how I could practically help the Samar people. People in Samar are either farmers or fishermen. The poverty rates are high in our province. There is not much else”.
