Access to healthcare saves lives in Georgia

We have been working in Georgia for more than ten years. During this time, we have supported the development of social services, inclusive education, environmental protection, and livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Today, our work focuses primarily on strengthening the healthcare system and improving the accessibility and quality of healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. We place a strong emphasis on cancer prevention and early detection. Our goal is to improve the quality and coverage of cancer screening programmes, raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and cancer prevention, and support the treatment of childhood cancers. We also work to promote and improve mental health and well-being.

Why is help in Georgia still needed?

Not everyone in Georgia has equal access to quality healthcare and other essential services. This is especially true in rural areas, where healthcare is often less accessible and people frequently seek medical care too late. Strengthening local healthcare and social systems helps improve the quality of life for entire communities.

How Caritas Czech Republic helps

Cancer prevention and treatment

Cancer prevention and treatment

In Georgia, we work with the Ministry of Health on systemic changes. We focus on improving access to free cancer screening and place strong emphasis on prevention, including raising awareness and improving the availability of services in remote areas. We also support the education and training of healthcare professionals.

Mental health

Mental health

We support healthcare in the field of mental health, with a particular focus on working with women, girls, and vulnerable groups. We aim to improve the quality and efficiency of the healthcare system, strengthen primary healthcare, and enhance coordination between primary and hospital care in the area of mental health, with an emphasis on a gender‑sensitive approach.

Inclusive education

Inclusive education

For three years, with the support of the Czech Development Agency, we strengthened the system of early childhood development and inclusive education. We renovated five early childhood development centres serving more than one hundred children with special needs and helped train local professionals. Through training and the provision of specialised equipment, we also supported inclusive education in selected Georgian kindergartens.

Meet the wool master reviving traditional wool processing in Georgia thanks to Caritas Czech Republic

To reach the village of Zemo Alveni in eastern Georgia, you have to drive along a narrow unpaved road. Two hours from the capital Tbilisi, a remote region awaits, where the traffic is jammed with slow-moving cows and herds of sheep graze on the vast hills. Their wool, which only a few years ago was thrown away and burned, now fills the premises of the processing plant in whose yard we are standing. It is processed thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic.
