Almost two months have passed since the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, claiming the lives of more than 57,000 people. The locals are still in need of help, many of them living in makeshift shelters and lacking decent sanitation. We have been helping the affected people since day one. We bring you the stories of the people we have helped thanks to the funds from the Caritas for Turkey and Syria fundraising appeal.

Morouj Yunis, a 24-year-old woman from Mosul, Iraq, always wanted to become a teacher. After graduating from the College of Education, she applied to many places, but unfortunately, all the responses were negative. Nevertheless, Morouj was able to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher after participating in the On-the-Job Training project organized by Caritas Czech Republic in Iraq. Thanks to the training, Morouj is more assertive and no longer afraid of interacting with people.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for a year. A year of terror, destruction, people fleeing their homes and destinies turned upside down. Svita Andrusyk from Kirovohrad took refuge in Gagauzia, Moldova, and is grateful that thanks to our support she can provide a dignified life for her three daughters.

For 8 years, Liudmila Bondarenco from Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine has been on the run. First time she fled her home when Russia invaded Crimea in 2014. This year, she escaped to safety across the borders and found refuge in Moldova. Here, she receives psychological support from Caritas Czech Republic to help her overcome the trauma caused by the war.

Eman Hameed, a 41-year-old woman from the Anbar Governorate in Iraq, wanted to become a seamstress since she was a little girl after watching her neighbours sew their clothes. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned., When ISIS attacked her town in 2014, Eman was forced to flee her home, unable to take her sewing machine with her. Today, Eman is a successful seamstress and has turned her childhood dream into a reality.

Ruslan Mendilo, 73-year-old man from Chernihiv region, suffered severe burns after his house was hit by shelling. Ruins, death, rapes, cruelty, torture, personal losses, constant danger, and fear. Ukrainians have been living in the horrors of the war for 8 months. All these terrible things are not something people can easily deal with. Sometimes it is very hard for them even to find a reason to live. That is why victims of war need professional help to be able to continue their normal life. Caritas Czech Republic provides professional training for psychologists and social workers for the local Caritas Ukraine team.

Nana Dvalidze, a middle-aged beekeeper from the Alpine zone of Georgia has been producing honey products for years. Although the quality of her honey was excellent and she was distributing it across the whole country, the volume of the production was low as the work with outdated equipment required a lot of time. After Caritas Czech Republic granted Nana modern honey production equipment, honey-pressing became much easier and that enabled her to expand the business.
