Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic, Lubuto Savings Group empowers young Zambians towards a brighter future

In the remote Nchelenge district of Luapula province in Zambia, Caritas Czech Republic has formed the Lubuto Savings Group with the support of the Financial Sector Deepening. One of the group's members is George Mwamba, a determined young man who dreams of pursuing higher education and becoming an engineer. By joining the group, George wants to save enough money to attend tertiary school and gain the skills needed for a successful future.

25-year-old Gloria, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo living in Zambia, had lost all hope to pursue a higher education until she received the news that she was selected for the DAFI scholarship for refugees. She is now a thriving bachelor's student in communication at the Cavendish University and wants to inspire other girls and refugees with her resilience. We spoke to Gloria in Lusaka, where she told us her story.

The war in Ukraine has turned the lives of thousands of families upside down. Thirty-year-old Valentina Vozneak was in her last trimester of pregnancy when the war broke out. After enduring days and nights of bombing, Valentina decided it was time to leave with her children and mother to find a safer place. They chose Moldova as their refuge, and Caritas Czech Republic supported them with hygiene products and food vouchers to meet their basic needs.

Young Moldovans are leaving their home country to work abroad because of the poor economic situation. They are leaving behind elderly people who are then dealing with inadequate health and social care, but also from loneliness. 74-year-old Zinovia is also struggling with loneliness. She is feeling much better thanks to nurse Valentina from a nearby home care centre.

Jean Makunga Habukali is a farmer living in Mongu, located in Zambia's Western Province. Jean was a radio presenter, but she lost her job in 2018. After that, Jean started farming cassava and cashew, however, she lacked proper facilities. Caritas Czech Republic provided Jean with cassava processing equipment and adequate space. Thanks to our help, Jean is now the proud owner of her own cassava farm.

The war in Ukraine has driven millions of people from their homes. Moldova has taken in more than 700,000 people since the start of the war, and around 100,000 remain in the country. 37-year-old Valentina and her two daughters have also found refuge in the Moldovan countryside, where they stay with their relatives. They could cover their utility bills and other basic needs thanks to financial help from Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova.

For Nicholas, finding a job in Zambia is almost an unachievable dream. Although he was born in Zambia, he is still considered a refugee. That is because his parents originally come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, from where they fled in search for safety. They found a safe haven in Zambia, where their son was born. Thanks to the support from Caritas Czech Republic and UNHCR, Nicholas now has his own workshop where he repairs refrigerators.

Mukeya Fostinah Ntenda is a member of the Twikatane Savings Group in the Nchelenge district of Zambia. She is 39 years old and married with six children. She was among the first people to join the group. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia and the Financial Sector Deepening (FSDZ) for introducing the savings group initiative, she now boasts of a thriving popcorn business.

Telemedicine is an innovative way of using technology to provide remote health and care services to vulnerable people, such as the elderly, those with reduced mobility or those living in remote areas. Telemedicine has also become a beacon of hope for Vasile, a 74-year-old resident of the village of Cărbuna in Moldova. Remote care services provided by Caritas Czech Republic have given Vasile back hope and improved his quality of life.
