Aftermath of the earthquake in Venezuela: Caritas is helping on the ground

Two weeks ago, Venezuela was hit with two earthquakes, resulting in the death of more than 3,800 people. Venezuelans continue searching for their relatives in the rubble of collapsed buildings, while the number of reported missing remains in the tens of thousands. According to the UN, the damage could reach as much as 37 billion USD. It is estimated that nearly 18,000 people lost their homes. Many of them camp in parks because accommodation capacity is lacking. Caritas Venezuela operates on the ground and is supported by Caritas Czech Republic through the international Caritas network.

There is no life without water: How Caritas helps secure access to it

This summer, the Czech Republic has already experienced several temperature records. We cope with the hottest days by staying indoors or finding shade wherever we can. Gardeners irrigate their crops with well water, while farmers cool their livestock with measures such as fans. During these periods, many of us impatiently wait for rain and make sure to stay hydrated. But can you imagine coping with extreme heat without access to water? Today, more than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to a safe source of drinking water. In some places, prolonged droughts and the impacts of climate change are the main causes. Elsewhere, armed conflicts further worsen the situation by destroying infrastructure and disrupting water supplies. We bring you an overview of the countries where Caritas Czech Republic is helping – from providing access to safe drinking water to supporting agriculture during droughts.

Earthquake in Venezuela: Immediate aid from Caritas will provide shelter, water, food, and access to medical care

The strongest earthquake in 100 years struck Venezuela at a time when the country had been facing a prolonged humanitarian crisis. Even before the disaster, nearly 8 million people had been in need of assistance. Shortly after the catastrophe, the government has opened the country to international aid. Caritas Venezuela has the option to accept financial donations from abroad and expand its capacity to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. In response to the event, organisations within the Caritas Internationalis network, including Caritas Czech Republic, have also become involved.
